Bring out the nature of the materials, let their nature intimately into your scheme. . . .Reveal the nature of the wood, plaster, brick or stone in your designs; they are all by nature friendly and beautiful.

Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris was born in northwestern
Switzerland across the border from France. In his early 30s, he
adopted the name "Le Corbusier" after his maternal grandfather and
built his reputation under that moniker.
Le Corbusiers involvement in the arts began when he attended
a local arts school. He began in metal engraving like his father,
but soon took up archiecture at the prompting of one of his
teachers. He built his first house when he was only 18 years old.
Following that project, he moved to Paris to work in the office of
Auguste Perret, a pioneer in the use of reinforced concrete.
From late 1910 to early 1911, he worked outside Berlin for Peter
Behrens, where he met Mies van der Rohe. In 1911, he traveled
through Greece and Turkey, studying architecture, especially the
Parthenon. In 1916, he relocated to Paris, where he lived for the
remainder of his life. In 1922, he went into private practice with
his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and remained in that partnership
until 1940.
During his storied career, Le Corbusier was not only an architect,
but also a painter, sculptor, author, furniture designer, and urban
planner. He is considered one of the leaders in the International
Style. |
