Ben Thompson was raised by an artist mother, who exposed him to Europe and encouraged his artistic endeavors. He studied first at the University of Virginia and graduated from Yale University in 1941 with a bachelors degree in fine arts. After that, he served in the U.S. Navy for four years, fighting in World War II. When he returned from the war, he moved to Cambridge, Mass., which he made his home. In 1946 Thompson formed the Architects' Collaborative with Walter Gropius and four Yale classmates. He remained with the Collaborative for 20 years; then he established Benjamin Thompson and Associates (BTA). From 1964 to 1968, Thompson taught architecture and served as department chairman at Harvard University. He received honorary doctorates from Colby College, the University of Massachusetts, and Minneapolis College of Art and Design. In 1976 Thompson collaborated with James Rouse to develop Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston, one of his best-known projects. Faneuil Hall Marketplace is typical of his approach to developing vibrant marketplaces in downtown locations. Together, they incorporated in this historic area the concept of a downtown street fair with great color and variety. Thompsons goal was to provide quality of life for the residents and users of his buildings. He incorporated simplicity and elegance in his designs, along with clear structure and purpose, as well as regionally appropriate materials.
