César Pelli earned a BArch in 1950 from the University of
Tucuman. He emigrated to the United States in 1952, receiving an
MArch from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in
1954.
He then worked as an associate architect in the offices of Eero
Saarinen and Associates from 1954 to 1964. There, he was project
designer for the TWA Terminal Building at JFK Airport in New York
and for Morse and Stiles Colleges at Yale University. Later, he
moved to Los Angeles where he became the director of design at the
firm Daniel, Mann, Johnson, & Mendenhall. From 1968 to 1976, he
was a design partner at Gruen Associates in Los Angeles.
In 1977 he founded Cesar Pelli and Associates with Diana Balmori
and F.W. Clarke III in New Haven, Conn. In addition, from 1977 to
1984, Pelli was dean of the School of Architecture at Yale, and he
continues to lecture on architecture.
Pelli is a published author many times over, with seven books and a
number of professional journal issues printed about his designs and
theories. He has received more than 100 awards for design
excellence and eight honorary degrees. He is a member of the
American Academy of Arts and Letters, the National Academy of
Design, the International Academy of Architecture, and the French
Academy of Architecture.
Pelli is a master designer of public spaces, known for designing
tall buildingsthe Petronas Twin Towers were the worlds
tallest buildings for a whileand other major urban landmarks.
He varies the appearance of his designs to address each
projects individual characteristics, such as its location,
climate, construction technology, and the buildings purpose.
He gives great consideration to the outside appearance, often using
glass as the primary material for the façade.
He often designs several options to present to clients, allowing
them to select the one they feel best fits their need and
desire. |
