The AIA
Community Forum
The
AIA Community Forum focuses on important issues for which AIA
Atlanta will plan and produce interactive events working with
allied
organizations and Atlanta’s architecture schools to allow
participate with the community presentingto hear speakers, to
examineexamining development alternatives and to discussdiscussing
design and planning issues.
The Beltline offers many opportunities for
redevelopment—recreation, transit, hike and bike trails,
commercial and residential uses. Decisions on what is to be
done
and how it is to be done have significant impact on the adjacent
neighborhoods and on the City as a whole. For example, in
residential development, questions of density and possible mixed use
arise. Should transit routes be planned as a catalyst for
transit-oriented development? How can the Beltline serve as a
neighborhood connector? What is more
desirable—commercial
development or recreation spaces?
AIA
Atlanta, in partnership with the Georgia Conservancy, the
Urban
Land Institute, the Georgia Tech College of Architecture, and Atlanta
planning officials is underway with it’s first community
study,
the West Side BeltLine Planning Area. The study is structured
to
provide training and education, to gather information and programming
data, and to establish long range objectives and plans for the
community. The process and the resulting documentation will
provide the tools to convey the community’sir visions for
their
neighborhoods as the Beltline is developed.
The study is organized into three phases:
- Roundtable discussions:
Raising Community Awareness
- Training Workshops:
Adding to Community Knowledge
- Community-Based Planning:
Building a Blueprints Action Plan
The Roundtables, hosted by neighborhood, community, and faith leaders
in the West Sside, prepare the community for subsequent planning
sessions. The Training Workshops equip the community with
basic
understanding of urban design principles, the difference between
density and overcrowding, the effects of various types of street
patterns on traffic, and the like. The Planning Workshops are
at
the heart of the process. Architects and architecture
students
assist in facilitating the work of the community and develop designs to
illustrate the neighborhoods vision. The study culminates in
a
report presented to the community for implementation.
As other segments of the Beltline are targeted, the AIA Community Forum
will be ready to assist in engaging the community in the
projects. The Forum will also be available for other
challenging
development issues throughout the Atlanta area.
