Spot… A New Visitor’s Center for Platteville
Encompassing
more than 27,000 square miles, northeast Colorado is home to cities
large and small—Fort Collins with more than 100,000
residents,
Jamestown just over 200. With the many unique cities and
towns
come just as many challenges and opportunities. The region
continues to develop and community growth has become a major issue for
many smaller towns in the area. As construction and infill
along
the I-25 corridor begin to close the gap between Denver and Fort
Collins, the population continues to rise steadily. With
continued growth in the region comes more visitors and increased
business. One such community faced with these issues is the
town
of Platteville
Platteville, on the agricultural plains of northeast Colorado, is a
linear town 15 miles east of I-25. Downtown, a mixture of
successful business and neglected buildings, lacks a strong
identity. When the City was given a piece of property at the
south end of Main Street, the Town Manager approached the Colorado
State University-Colorado Department of Local Affairs Rural Technical
Assistance program for advice on how the development of this piece of
property could spur downtown revitalization. AIA Colorado
North
learned of the project through CSU-DOLA and was invited to work with
the Town of Platteville on this project.
Working
with students at the University of Colorado, Boulder, AIA North Colorado
developed an inventory of the town’s assets and challenges
through a series of site visits, and workshops with community
leaders. From this information, architects and students
compiled
a Redevelopment Plan for Main Street including recommendations for a
unified streetscape, areas for potential commercial development and
ideas for the central business district’s revitalization.
Future plans include community meetings where the vision and
recommendations can be refined and the principles of smart growth and
sustainable development explored.
