AIA Gainesville Celebrates Design/AIA150 Initiatives

Gainesville, Florida, home to the University of Florida, is a small city, mostly suburban in character with a small downtown business district.  The rapid growth and rising land prices that typify the state of Florida have not passed Gainesville by.  Added to the sprawl and homelessness that accompany rapid growth are issues typical of a college town—large transient student population, shortage of affordable housing, transportation and parking challenges, downtown redevelopment, and public infrastructure improvements.

AIA Gainesville’s initiative addresses these issues in a variety of formats:
  • Town Hall meetings
  • Panel discussions
  • Public lectures at the University of Florida
  • Exhibitions
  • Building tours
  • Film series
The goal of these activities is to bring together public officials, University leaders, the University’s Florida Community Design Center, and the community at large to build consensus on how to construct a shared vision for the City’s future growth and development.  Particular emphasis in all of these events is on the elements of sustainable design and development and livable communities.

The results of the initiative will be posted on AIA Gainesville’s website.
