Green Partnership for a Sustainable Riverside
AIA Inland California began working with the City of Riverside in 2002
to host a “State of the City/Sustainable Symposium” to help
establish sustainable design guidelines for the community. The
project involved a series of workshops in which teams of architects and
community members developed visions, strategies and guidelines to help
protect the environment in their region. In 2007, the Riverside
City Council unanimously approved the teams’
recommendations. By agreeing to implement these new design
guidelines, Riverside their sights on becoming a model “solar
city” in Southern California, meeting more energy needs with
renewable solar power. This prompted architects from AIA Inland
California to extend their efforts to the City of Redlands, forming a
Bi-City Green Partnership.
The AIA Inland California comprises 41 municipalities in two counties,
each with distinctive needs. Through this initiative, AIA Inland
California is showing the value of sustainable design for the
region. Teams of AIA architects are working with both Riverside
and Redlands, along with their civic leaders and citizens, to create
pilot programs for other cities. The AIA Inland California has
also partnered with California State Polytechnic University in Pomona
to create a lecture series to help increase public awareness of
architecture. The three-part series will include internationally
distinguished architects and urban planners.
This “green” partnership program is an effort to establish
sustainable environmental solutions for the municipalities of Riverside
and Redlands, both of which are experiencing rapid population
growth. A “Clean and Green” Task Force has already
been formed in Riverside, with a policy statement of sustainability
being prepared by the Riverside mayor’s office.
“Environmentally, the initiatives of both Riverside and Redlands
will provide for social, environmental, and economic sustainability,
mutually dependent and critical to the ‘livability’ and
long-term prosperity of the cities,” said Pasqual Gutierrez,
President of the AIA Inland California.
