Biscayne Everglades Greenway

The growing population of Miami-Dade County is one of the most ethnically diverse in the country.  Residents represent many countries and cultures, and make up the fourth largest public school system in the U.S.  The county comprises thirty-five cities as well as sprawling areas that are unincorporated.  Those neighborhoods that are not part of the cities are represented by elected Community Councils.  Many lack identity or “sense of place.”

The Tropical Greenway initiative will use Miami-Dade County’s park system to link Biscayne Bay, the county’s natural border to the east, to the Everglades, the natural border to the west.  This link will be accomplished using existing parks, road rights-of-way, and procured land.  The project will connect Greater Miami’s various communities with one grand Greenway winding across the county.  Cultures will be joined at the grassroots level, community by community, with designs that reinforce the ethnicity and culture of each.

AIA Miami will work with the Miami-Dade County Park and Recreation Department, elected officials, Community Councils and non-profit groups to divide the Greenway into “community zones.”  Town Hall meetings and community planning workshops will engage citizens of each zone in identifying their needs and desires for their part of the Greenway.

The Greenway will be designed to accomplish the following:
  • A pedestrian-friendly route, allowing residents and tourists to walk or bicycle to shops, services, schools, and cultural resources while reducing traffic and encouraging a healthier, more active lifestyle
  • A variety of transportation options, recreation and aesthetic choices for the community
  • Lively places with specific meaning to a diverse populace in various stages of life
  • Connection between varied communities, land uses and building types – both practically and symbolically, within the context of a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly park system
  • A grand public space featuring public art and places that encourage civic participation
  • A series of focused public identities, reflective of the communities and cultures of the residents, woven together to create a broader county-wide identity
  • An enhanced and expanded park system
Following two rounds of community workshops and collaboration with the Associated General Contractors for cost estimates, AIA Miami presented the proposed design in a public meeting.  The process of funding the project has been initiated with the County Commission.
