A Sustainable
Vision for Santa Barbara
In
Santa Barbara and California as throughout the world, the demand for
architects and interior designers who specialize in green residential,
institutional and commercial building rises, as the public becomes more
aware of the benefits of sustainable, energy efficient and
environmentally friendly building.
AIA
Santa Barbara (chartered 1945) has committed to supporting
the City of Santa Barbara as it embarks on an update of the Plan Santa
Barbara, helping to engage the community in establishing the next
increment of growth in the City from 2010-2030. As
part of the AIA150 Blueprint for America initiative, AIA Santa Barbara
will lead a team of design professionals and experts in urban planning
to educate the public about livable communities and sustainable design
practices, and advocating for the inclusion of AIA principles into this
general plan update.
In its future-directed planning, the City of Santa Barbara focuses on
the shifting of built-up communities toward a growing harmony with
nature and a healthier quality of life, in part through collaboration
with The Sustainability Project, founded in 1993. With such
assistance, the City of Santa Barbara has developed green building
guidelines to help homeowners and building professionals implement a
range of green practices in their projects. It has also provided
“green consultations” for proposed development
projects.
A
coalition of local groups headed by the Community Environmental Council
and including AIA Santa
Barbara, The Sustainability Project, the Santa Barbara
Contractors Association, and Built Green Santa Barbara, presented the
Challenge and their shared commitment to assist the City in meeting it
through its master plan update process.
Through “Plan Santa Barbara: Living Within
Resources,” the City seeks to encourage the broadest possible
community involvement in the planning process, through a broad-based
public outreach process known as “You Plan Santa
Barbara,” that will focus on future growth and
development. Invitations to participate note Santa
Barbara’s “constantly evolving” community
diversity, economic vitality and environmental quality, as
“global events and technology are rapidly changing how we
live, work and play together.”
Architects and design professionals have special insights and skills to
contribute to the planning process, and the AIA Santa Barbara
Blueprint for America program brings these resources to serving
community needs effectively.
