Opening
Doors: Providing True Recreational Opportunities for Persons with
Disabilities in Our Region
In
Savannah, as in other cities, accommodations for the physically
disabled lag behind the needs—especially in recreation
areas. Compounding the problem are limited
pedestrian-friendly environments and transportation options.
These and other issues surrounding ADA requirements have led to tension
between the various governing bodies and advocates for the disabled
community.
To bridge that gap, AIA
Savannah and the City of Savannah have partnered in an
initiative focusing on one aspect of a livable
community—public parks and recreation areas.
In September the public was invited to join AIA Savannah in conducting
a survey of 39 of the 55 parks sites under the City’s
jurisdiction. After gathering at a single park site,
participants were divided into teams, given a briefing on the survey
process, and sent in provided transportation to the study
areas. After completing the survey, participants returned to
the gathering site to turn in their results and to enjoy lunch.
The
findings will be compiled and posted on the City’s website to
enable citizens to review park amenities in order to choose a
destination for their enjoyment. The City will maintain and
update the site as improvements to the parks are made. AIA
Savannah will select a single location to initiate physical
improvements based on the survey findings.
The disabled community will have a direct yet non-confrontational means
to indicate needed improvements to public recreation facilities and the
City of Savannah will have valuable information for determining
priorities in public improvement projects.
