AIA Check out the Approved Blueprint for America Initiatives This month we would like to acknowledge our Bronze sponsors for their contributions to the continuing success of our campaign. In alphabetical order they are: Bank of America Bentley Systems Inc. Stephen B. and Lisa S. Bonner Clark Construction Group LLC Cooper Carry Charitable Foundation Inc. Ellerbe Becket Hanley Wood LLC HGA HMC Architects Helmut Jahn, FAIA Little OWP/P Architects Inc. Pei Cobb Freed and Partners Architects LLP SmithGroup Inc. Swanke, Hayden, Connell Architects LLP Last month, we exceeded $10 million in AIA150 donations. Thanks to all for supporting the work of these donations as we continue to develop the Blueprint projects, continue dialogue and activities around America’s Favorite Architecture, restore and maintain the Octagon, prepare to green the AIA headquarters building, publish a book on architecture, and put money aside for research and scholarships. These are all appropriate and exciting ways to spread the word about the power of architecture and the beauty and lasting legacy of good design. More to follow… Also, last month 82 Blueprint projects were uploaded into Google Earth, and 14 others are ready to go live later this month. |
America’s
Favorite Gains in Popularity America’s Favorite Architecture Web site continues to be popular with the public. From June 15, 2007, to August 15, 2007, the site welcomed more than 20,000 visitors from 150 countries and territories. The five countries responsible for the most traffic to the site during this period were the United States (10,320), Germany (996), Canada (733), Japan (658), and Italy (644). Public comments continue to roll in and the site to date has logged approximately 1,400. While some people questioned why certain buildings were mentioned and others ignored, most are pleased that they have been reminded of the treasures they have in a nearby city or even across town. AIA
components are continuing to reserve the companion exhibit,
America’s Favorite Architecture, as well. This month the
exhibit
finished successful stays at the University of Texas, Arlington, School
of Architecture and the Nebraska State Capitol Building in Lincoln,
Nebraska. The exhibit will be opening the first week of
November
in Richmond at the Virginia Center for Architecture. From
there
it will travel to the University of Louisville’s Cressman
Center
for the Visual Arts in February; Frank Lloyd Wright’s
Dana-Thomas
House in Springfield, Ill., in March; and AIA Lubbock and AIA Blue
Ridge in April. More stops are scheduled beyond this spring,
including AIA Central Valley, AIA San Antonio, AIA Rochester, AIA
Memphis, AIA Ohio, and AIA New Mexico (see the list below). If
you’re interested in hosting the exhibit, please contact Andy Smith. Here’s a list of where the exhibit will travel to (so far):
AIA Fort Worth Chapter When the AIA National Component offered the traveling exhibition, America’s Favorite Architecture (AFA), to our components, many jumped at the prospect to take part in this wonderful occasion. AIA Fort Worth had originally planned to stage the exhibit at its public library but decided instead that the exhibit offered them an opportunity to foster a better relationship with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) allowing the public to see what UTA was doing and tie it with the local chapter. AIA Fort Worth took an extra step and added a local element. ![]() ![]() With
a national poll limited to 150 buildings, few were representative of
the Southwest. The AIA Fort Worth component thought more local
architecture needed to be recognized. The component polled its members
and sought their vote on selected buildings. The end result was 28 top
vote-getters within 15 counties. The Kimbell Art Museum, the Marty
Leonard Chapel, and the Tarrant County Courthouse were AIA Fort
Worth’s top three picks (click here to view all the
buildings). The AFA exhibit and the chapter’s poll
received
press coverage from the local media including the Forth Worth Star-Telegram,
but more importantly, it gave the AIA another opportunity as a
profession to celebrate our accomplishments with the communities where
we live. The Blueprint for America Spotlight—AIA Asheville A vibrant city rich in cultural activity, Asheville appears to be the quintessential livable community. The very things that make Asheville a desirable place to live are threatened as new development sprawls over farming valleys and forested mountain slopes. For example, North Carolina’s Department of Transportation recently completed the final section of I-26, which spans from Asheville to Kingsport, Tenn., and increases accessibility to and through the region. Construction of the I-26 connector through Asheville is scheduled to begin in 2012. The project will add lanes to existing portions of the highway and construct a new section crossing the French Broad River near downtown. Concerned citizens worry about the aesthetics of such a project and want to make the most of its potential as a catalyst for sustainable development along the transportation corridor and in the greater community. AIA Asheville has created the Asheville Design Center to engage the community in planning discussions and to help shape the project so that this major public works initiative becomes an asset to the community. AIA Asheville has involved community stakeholders in private and public presentations and discussions of the project and assembled a team of design professionals who have developed a three-dimensional topographical model of the project area, as well as illustrations, graphics, and renderings to help the community visualize various possibilities. Two community design workshops studied the design of the current proposal and suggested improvements. Last year an alternative design incorporating community goals was ready for public scrutiny. The new plan could save as much as $150 million by reducing land acquisition and roadway costs while creating opportunities for the growth of downtown Asheville toward the riverfront and improving connections with neighborhoods on both sides of the river.
